Our friends at Alternative Rugby Commentary set up last season’s Super 14 nicely. We are looking forward to their take on the action again this year.

The Super 14 is the largest provincial rugby union tournament championship in the Southern Hemisphere, consisting of provincial teams from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

There are fourteen provincial teams that compete against one another. Unlike the Heineken Cup in the Northern Hemisphere, there are no divisions or pools. Each team plays 13 games during the regular season which runs for fourteen and a half weeks. super14teamsmap

The best four teams, finishing in the top four places on the competition ladder after the regular season, enter the finals leg of the tournament. The semi-finals are contested to decide the two finalists, and the championship match is played at the highest ranked winners’ home ground.

In 2008, the Crusaders beat the Waratahs 20 – 12 in the final, giving them their seventh finals win since the tournament began as the Super 10 in 1993.

The 2009 Super 14 Tournament Round 1 begins the weekend of 13/14 February 2009 as follows:

  • Highlanders v Brumbies
  • Western Force v Blues
  • Lions v Cheetahs
